What is AICTE?

AICTE stands for All India Council for Technical Education.  Found in the year 1945, AICTE had objectives to raise the level of the education system in India and ensure its proper functioning. Initially, it worked as a mere advisory body under the workshop of Department of Education but got recognized as the statutory body in 1987.  AICTE looks into the matters concerning the technical education India. It is the only aspect where it differs from UGC.  Its main job is to certify the graduate and post-graduate programs in various technical institutions.

With its head office in New Delhi, the body take note of all the necessary requirements and functioning of these technical institutes across the country. Other offices in the major cities like Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai,  Kolkata, Mumbai, Kanpur etc coordinates accordingly to work progressively.

The chairperson, vice Chairman, and the member secretary make up the council body.

What is the importance of AICTE?

As the name is self-explanatory, All India council for technical education’s approval is mandatory for any technical college. A degree offered in courses like BCA, MCA, B-Tech by a specific college will be considered relevant only if AICTE lists it among the functional colleges. Hence it is safe to check the name and authenticity of the college before jumping into it.

Apart from this the body also plays a quintessential role in the areas of training, research work and the educational development. The topic of interest and relevance from the commerce industry, vocational studies, sciences, architecture, and environment are also worked upon by the council.

Planning, plotting, and framing of rules for bringing stability in the mannerism of work on the guidelines suggested by the National policy of Education is another job that can only be played by this council thereby making it an important organization.

Factors that add to its importance constitute its task of funding for the priority areas. Also, it holds the authority to demand an investigation or inspection of any institute, department or college to examine the standard of teaching, staff and the examination procedures that are adopted by these educational hubs.

What are the major works performed by AICTE?

AICTE has opted a more sorted way of carrying out the work in order to maintain transparency and workability. It has divided the workload into eight categories namely:

  • Administration Bureau
  • Research and institutional development bureau
  • Quality assurance bureau
  • Planning and coordination bureau
  • Management and technology bureau
  • Finance bureau
  • Engineering and technology bureau

AICTE makes sure to establish the coordination between all the technical institutes imparting quality education at different levels. It relies on the ground data collected after surveys to formulate plans for the development in the field.  It considers innovation as an equally important factor and adopts it to raise up the level.

The council also takes measures for the promotion of technical education for women, handicapped and the underprivileged sections of the society who are deprived of certain facilities. Also, the criteria to select the staff, laying the norms for various programs and examinations are as well looked up and decided by the council.

Commercialization of the technical education has become a burning issue of discussion and an area that needs immediate attention. AICTE works in the direction to eliminate any such flaws that add to the commercialization.  Also, a major decision of the steps that need to be involved in the admission of a student to a technical institute is discussed and finalized by the council.
