History of IGNOU – Kolkata

When the British grew tired of the trading town charm Hooghly in 1686, they moved downstream to the three villages – Kolkata, Sutanuti, and Gobindapur. Led by Job Charnock, a British trader, set up factories in Sutanuti on August 24, 1690, the date accepted as the basis of modern Calcutta. England then proceeded to build a single post from three villages. Ten years later, a fort was built near what is now known as BBD Bag and consolidated city of Calcutta was established.
