The Indian Institute of Science was originated in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nussarwanji Tata, the Government of India and the Maharaja of Mysore. Tata considered a university of science in 1896 that would work for the advantage of India, and in 1898, created a donation for establishing such an institution. University has the approx 4200 students, 2750 doctoral students, 950 master students and 500 students in a four-year, research programme in the sciences.
